Representation

Lego Movie Teaser & Poster:

Stereotyping&Gender:

Emmet and Wyldstyle
Emmet// 'the story of a nobody who saved everybody'

EMMET

Conforming---How does this portray the male gender?
It supports the stereotype of men being the dominant gender, as the products focus on a man as the male character and he becomes the hero.Emmet conforms to male gender as he is portrayed as brave and strong as normal stereotypical males are.

Challenging ---How does this challenge the male gender?
Poster Emmet is in the center, but his facial expression shows him running away, terrified.
It challenges the dominant stereotype that men are powerful and strong. Although Emmet is centered in the main poster, his facial expression is scared and he is running away from danger rather than facing it head on. Teaser trailer he says ' I want to go home' challenging brave representation of male genders.

WYLDSTYLE

Conforming---How does this portray the female gender?
Wyldstyle is wearing makeup which shows the conformity to the stereotype of the female gender stereotype that they need to wear makeup to be shown as a strong women. Her facial expression os cheeky which conforms to the 'flirty' stereotype women contain within society. Wyldstyle is a partner to Emmet which conforms to the normal 'women as a side part to males' societal norm. She wears dark clothing, has unnatural hair colors, and has freckles, but she is still depicted as beautiful. This is important because women who challenge beauty ideals are oftentimes depicted as undesirable in the media.

Challenging ---How does this challenge the female gender?
Wyldstyle challenges the representation of females as she is shown as a strong women who helps to save the world with Emmet which is challenging the dominant representation of females being weak and unhelpful in society.

Ethnicity:

Vitruvius
-•His character is a noble wizard, with dark skin and a much older man

•He is represented as wise and a skilled fighter. This is important because oftentimes in the media people with disabilities are depicted as powerless, evil, less attractive or as overcoming a disability.

Vitruvious challenged the media stereotype of ethnic minorities as black people are usually shown as inferior and weaker then white people. Vitruvious is shown as strong and uses his magical powers to defeat Lord Business.

How does Vitruvius challenge the media stereotype of old people?
Vitruvious challenges the media stereotype of old people as old people are stereotypically shown as weak and inferior wheras Vitruvious is shown in the poster as strong willed and brave.

    1. The producers of 'The Lego Movie' celebrate different representations to portray to the audience that they are trying to cater for different types of people. For example, different ethnicities of characters Emmet and Vitrouvious shows the multiculturalism within the film and how the producers are trying not to discriminate and uninclude certain ethnicities. The use of challenging of the male gender stereotype destroys the usual 'strong' expectations of male characters to indoctrinate that not all males need to be brave and strong (Emmet is presented as scared in his poster) which is helping the younger audience to not fall into being brought up with these stereotypical ideas.
